Following on from the announcement last week that the planned start to the season has had to be postponed, due to the governments efforts to suppress the corona virus – the CBL have released a ‘3-point play’ game plan as part of the league’s ‘Bounce Back From Corona‘ strategy.

The ‘3-point play’ proposes three potential re-start dates for the league, that follow government compliance and prioritise the health & safety of players, coaches, staff and officials throughout the league.

  • OPTION 1: SUNDAY 11TH APRIL
  • OPTION 2: SUNDAY 16TH MAY
  • OPTION 3: SUNDAY 11TH JUNE

The three proposed dates are wholly dependent on the government guidelines and the ‘health of the nation’ as they relate to youth sports and physical activity, however provide potential light at the end of a basketball barren tunnel throughout the corona virus pandemic.

Steve Whyte, CBL Co-Commissioner:

“We’ve looked at a number of different scenario’s for the league this year in our efforts to serve our community and teams who are all calling for us to save our season. While we share the sentiment, we have to do it in a responsible way, which has led us to this new plan. The advice we are receiving indicates we may have 3 solid windows of opportunity to bring back actual league action this season, so it is our duty to explore and prepare for all of those options”.

Option 1 of the plan would see teams back on court after the Easter holidays, while Option 2 targets mid-May and option 3 proposes an early summer start.

Nhamo Shire, CBL Co-Commissioner:

“The schedule for all 3 options is certainly different from what we’ve done in the past, but we are all living through very different times right now. If we have to extend the season into the summer, feedback from players, coaches and parents across the league has been that they would be happy to do that. The overriding call right now seems to be to ‘Save Our Season’, so we are going to do all we can to do that – within the confines of following government advice and prioritising health and safety, of course”.

Further details on competitive format and confirmations on the viability on each of the options are to be released via the website in the weeks ahead.
