The Brent Panthers cemented their dominance in the GCBL U14 Girls Division with a resounding 77-34 victory over the London Knights in the championship final. The Panthers, who had been the team to beat all season, saved their most impressive performance for last, overwhelming their opponents from start to finish.
At the heart of the Panthers’ success was the dynamic duo of Naila Matata and Narini Kuwana, both of whom finished with 17 points apiece. Matata, who earned MVP honors, showcased her all-around game with 6 steals and 5 assists in addition to her scoring. Kuwana, widely regarded as one of the most talented players in the league, matched Matata’s offensive output, proving why she’s been a standout all season.
The Panthers’ onslaught wasn’t limited to their backcourt, however. Sapphire Guidolin-Duncan dominated the paint, recording a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while also contributing 3 blocks. Her athleticism and presence in the key were key factors in the Panthers’ commanding performance.
While the final score was lopsided, the London Knights’ journey to the finals shouldn’t be overlooked. As a relatively new girls program, their progress throughout the season has been noteworthy and trending in the right direction. Anusho Schonfeld led the Knights’ efforts with a commendable 15 points in the face of the Panthers’ relentless defence. There is little doubt the Knights have talent to build upon and excellent coaching with which to do it.
The championship game was a fitting conclusion to a season that saw the Panthers take the next step on their ongoing journey towards competitive excellence. Their combination of offensive firepower, defensive intensity, and team chemistry proved too much for the competition, culminating in this decisive victory. With core players like Matata, Kuwana, Guidolin-Duncan and the ever-improving Demi Leigh-Lewis leading the charge, the future looks bright for this Brent Panthers squad.
The challenge now lies with the rest of the league to rise to the level set by these newly crowned champions. If this season is any indication, the GCBL U14 Girls Division promises to be a showcase of rising talent and competitive basketball for years to come.
